      CBD: A Dietitian's Perspective

What is CBD?: Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid, or chemical compound that acts on a corresponding receptor in the brain. It has been shown to be effective in pain relief, insomnia, anxiety, muscle spasms, migraines, and irritable bowel disease.

Does it get me high?: CBD products have the chemical compound of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound that gets you “high” removed. CBD products with and without THC make it very clear on the label if it contains or does not contain THC, per state regulation.

Sources: CBD can come in a wide variety of sources: capsules, liquid drops, gels, topical creams, mints, drinking sodas, candies, and others. Does it work?: Research says: It depends. Everyone has a different tolerance. Some individuals see positive effects after 2mg of CBD, some see it after 50mg. The mantra,”start low and go slow”, applies here.

Actual potency as advertised?: Just like supplements, CBD is not regulated by the FDA. Therefore, the label claims of the amount of CBD might be inaccurate. A 2020 research published by the Journal of Dietary Supplements found that of the 25 CBD products they tested for potency, only 3 were within 20% of the claimed amount in the label.

To find a trusted CBD products, a third party certificate of analysis (COA), should be available on the company website or via QR code on the product label. This means the product was analyzed and approved to contain the accurate ingredients they claim.
